1956 Window Decal Courtesy of Junelle Bernard
The car window decal depicted to the left was donated Cedar, Minnesota resident Junelle Bernard. An excellent example of a souvenir popular in the 1950s and 1960s, decals were typically applied to a family's car windshield on automobile vacations boasting of destinations visited. In the 1910s and 1920s, decals were applied to steamer trunks in the heyday of trans-Atlantic sailing for similiar reasons.
The image is a variation of the Alexander Phimister Proctor's 1893 plaster cast statue of "Bronco Buster" - originally known as "The Buckaroo" - but without a whip or cowboy hat. The Mandan Rodeo uses a variation of this bronco buster as the centerpiece of its logo.
The slogan continues to be used by the City of Mandan even after its use was discontinued by the Northern Pacific Railway. The phrase was used in promotional materials designating the Mandan Division as the eastern edge of its western service territiory in the 1890s. The City of Fort Worth also claims it as its own. A Hurst, Texas resident registered the tagline with the US Patent and Trademark Office since 1974 as a service mark associated with his western art business.
